The Acushnet Veteran's Memorial Park Committee is a non-profit organization that was born out of the acknowledged need for a dignified recognition of the service and sacrifices made by local men and women in the uniformed services of the United States.
The committee began on Veterans Day 2009. It met for the first time at the Acushnet Housing Authority meeting room a week later. There were about 10 people there, and considering the holiday season that is a good turn out. Since then the committee has grown to 15 or more. We currently have a group with varied life experiences. There are men and women, with military and non military background, ranging in ages from their early 20's to some in the 70's. We are still willing to take on new members because there is always room for more help.
We decided to pursue the historical Severance property on Main Street in Acushnet as a possible site. Our plan would be to approach the Conservation and Preservation Committee for funds to make the purchase.
On the open lot to the east of the home we would begin the construction of the Acushnet Veterans Memorial Park. We have been given verbal agreements with local contractors such as Acushnet Fence, Hudon Crane, Elf’s Landscape Inc, MAG Irrigation, and Knox Electric to help with the work required to build the park.
We hope to build a memorial park that will be a “living monument” to the men and women past, present, and future who have served our great country. We say “living” because we hope to also honor those people who in the future choose to serve in the military.
